I wonder why we're supposed to flip the flag up on our mailboxes when we have outgoing mail. Is it to let the mailman know that there's mail in there for him to pick up? If that's the case, then why bother with a flag? Isn't he just going to open it anyway to drop off your mail?

Maybe the flag is there to let US know when the mail has arrived. But then it becomes useless on days when you have no outgoing mail.

What's the story there, huh?

Since the PS2 hard drive was introduced in March, only two applications that use it have seen the light of day: Final Fantasy XI Online and the infamous HD Loader.

Someone spilled the beans over at the official PlayStation2 HDD message board about HD Loader, and it's now full of locked threads and mass hysteria. You really need to dig to find any questions about Final Fantasy.

If you haven't ordered a copy yet for yourself, you may not be able to for much longer now that it's on Sony's radar. Divineo has proven itself to be an incompetent reseller, so your best bet is to try an alternate source.

I was up way too late last night watching Big Bucks: The Press Your Luck Scandal. I never knew about it until now, and boy howdy Michael Larsen is my new hero.
An out of work ice-cream vendor, Larsen had spent his spare time meticulously videotaping the workings of PYL's 'big board' and discovered what nobody else had - a pattern in the board's supposed randomness that guaranteed he would never lose as long as his concentration and hand-eye coordination could hold out.

I hooked up my new PS2 network adapter this weekend in preparation for my soon-to-arrive HDLoader, and I had a hell of a time getting it to work. I kept getting "DNAS ERROR (-116)" no matter what I tried.

After DHCP wouldn't work and assigning a static IP wouldn't either, I figured I should start poking around on my router, and therein lay the problem!

The problem turned out to be this- The PS2 network adapter won't work with the D-Link DI-624. Not out of the box, anyway. To make it work you have to visit the Home/LAN page on your router and ENABLE DNS RELAY (it's disabled by default.) Turn that thingie on and you're good to go!

Through Google I found tons of people online with this same problem, and none of them had found a fix. Hopefully by posting this here I'll help other people in the same situation!

We saw The Notebook last night...it was a great film, but it was one of the saddest movies I've seen in a good long while. People were crying all around me, and I fought like hell to keep the tears in my eyes and the sniffles to a minimum.

Anyone who comes out of that theater thinking that stem cell research is bad needs to have their head examined.

Disneyland has finally caved in to the pressure and has started selling one day park-hopper tickets for Disneyland and DCA. Two-day park hoppers have been available for a while now, but most of the DLR's visitors are locals who don't plan on driving to Anaheim two days in a row.

This photo of the ticket booth prices confirms it. The ol' one-day-one-park tickets are still $49, but $20 more will let you visit both parks on the same day.

If nothing else will goose the attendance at DCA, this will.

Last weekend we drove up to see my brother graduate from UC Davis. It was cool, especially with Sirius to keep us company for the 6+ hour drive.

I can't belive that I graduated 4 years ago. Where does the time go? I can't say I missed it too much...I'm glad to be earning a paycheck now and not having to worry about grades or project deadlines. Life is good, and I've got myself a wonderful wife to share it with.

Spammers are angry all the time, even when you're not shutting them down for spamming (yet).
Porno site webmasters are some of the nicest, friendliest, customers you can have.

Telephone job interviews are usually outsourced to a call center, but even so it's always a good idea to not be a jerk when you call!
When I launched into the actual interview, it really pissed them off. They'd get furious that the freaking receptionist had the audacity to waste their time by ... And then round about question 5 it would dawn on them that this was the interview. I could hear the quick catch in their speech as it hit them, and the sick pause as they thought back over how they'd been behaving for the past several minutes.

I'm with Wired News. G4TechTV sucks.

Sure, they play the old TechTV shows, but so far it's mostly been repeats. And G4's shows are so horrendous that scooping your eyeballs out of their sockts with grapefruit spoons would be preferrable to watching them.

Would you really want to spend 30 minutes of your life listening to a pro football player talk about what he likes about Madden 2004? How about a show where you watch small teams of teenagers play Halo against each other for another 30 minutes? If you answered yes to either, G4TechTV might be a good fit for you!

Here's to hoping they can fix what they broke - and fast.

Two big announcements in the world of Tivo this morning!

As of today, any additional Tivos on your account after the first one will see their monthly fee cut to $6.95, rather than $12.95. (Lifetime subs are still $299.)

But the biggest news is that the Home Media Option - previously a one-time $100 fee - is now a FREE STANDARD FEATURE of the Tivo service. The HMO adds four great features to Tivo, all of which are useless if you don't have a home network, and one of which is useless if you don't also have at least one other Series2 Tivo.

Still, it's nice to see them give stuff away!

The birthday weekend rocked me like a hurricane, and I owe it all to Tammy for organizing the extravaganza.

Sunday morning we went to the Tustin Chili Cookoff and Street Fair with Stacy and Steve. After that we hopped over to the ol' DLR where we had a late lunch at the Blue Bayou. I had never had one of their famed Monte Cristos before, so it was a first for me. That night we saw The Day After Tomorrow, which is a good disaster movie with great effects and badly mangled science (so I've read). I thought it was pretty entertaining and didn't think it was nearly as bad as the reviews made it out to be. Harry Potter 3 on the other hand, was not up to my expectations.

On the presents side of things, I made out like a bandit.

Tammy and her parents teamed up to get a Series2 80 hour Tivo to replace our 14 hour Series1 behemoth. It's gonna be so nice to not have to plug that thing in to a phone line every two weeks. I've got an old wireless USB network adapter collecting dust in a closet somewhere. Time to dig that guy out and put him to work!

My parents gave me money to put towards a satellite radio which I just ordered yesterday. I decided to go with the Clarion PNP because it was the least-flashiest and therefore least-likely-to-get-stolen option. I ordered it online at the cheapest place I could find it - Crutchfield of all places. Expect a full review and maybe some installation photos when it arrives this week!

Day 2 of being 26 has begun!

I guess Korean game developers have been pumping out really cool online games and I just haven't been noticing!

If you get tired of Gunbound and Magic Punk, try these:

Survival Project is a free online battle game. It's not turn based and the action is fast! And I won't be playing it again because I'm so bad at it!

Ragnarok Online is a multiplayer isometric RPG. They charge a subscription fee ($13.99 per month - lame) but someone has opened up an independent unofficial server called MobRO that lets you play free of charge. Pretty sweet eh?

So it looks like the people behind Gunbound have just put a brand new online puzzle game into beta called Magic Punk. If you've got a Gunbound account, you can login to Magic Punk and start playing to-DAY!

It's sort of like Bust A Move, but it's upside down and it has some unique magic spell options! Every game is a head to head one-on-one match with Internet opponents who are guaranteed to be better than you! So far I've had my ass handed to me 10 times in a row (it keeps track for you.)

With a little practice I will reign supreme!

Something else I did over the holiday weekend was get back into playing GunBound. I'm still not really how some things work, and the directions are written in "Korenglish" so they're basically useless... ("It creates electric-pole and manages it. Bomb that goes through the eletric-pole get magnetic force and creates thunder bolts.") ...but I'm learning more and more every time I play!

The game is super fun and I still can't believe it's free. They do have an online shop where you can use a credit card to purchase in-game upgrades instead of earning them within the game, so let's just hope they stick to that business model! Free is good!

I'm not sure how this works because it doesn't require a mod chip, but HD Loader claims it will let you copy your PS2 games to an internal hard drive (which you provide,) enabling you to play tons of games disc-free! Who needs a DVD burner and soldering iron when you've got this?

2:22 PM
So there's this channel I get on my TV called Noggin, and it's sort of like Nickelodeon for preschoolers. At 6pm Noggin becomes The N, an edgier version of Nickelodeon for the teenage crowd.

When I browse through my channel guide it's usually when The N is on the air...and 99% of the time, the show that's on is "Degrassi: The Next Generation". I got so sick of seeing that weirdly-named show on my program guide for the past few months that this weekend I actually watched an episode. And another. And another. This show is amazing.

Degrassi is set in a high school in Canada, funny accents and all. But the kids in the show are put through some pretty tough real-world situations! Infidelity, family alcoholism, teen sex, and plenty more are all there! It's a little like a teen soap-opera, but the dialogue is believable and the characters come off as being authentic and very real. And you won't be able to stop watching after your first 10 minutes.

I haven't seen very many episodes, but already I can tell you that Craig needs to dump Ashley and get with Manny. Ashley's all about keeping up appearances. Craig needs to be with someone who appreciates him and Ashley ain't it!

I'm not sure how The N makes any money, because as far as I can tell 95% of their programming is Degrassi, and the only commercials that they play are Degrassi promos. But who cares - the next season starts Friday! I'm pumped!
